Two in the Hand

The two-bay scallops shown here are bivalves, which is the common name for marine and freshwater molluscs. The raised annual growth rings indicate these scallops are at a harvestable age. Molluscs, an important food source, include clams oysters mussels, scallops, and many other families of mollusks that have two hinged shells. Bivalves utilize various reproductive strategies to ensure the success of future generations.
