Home to a team of thinkers and creatives dedicated to reimagining communication about the ocean and transforming the image of ocean science.

Room 71 is a new communications initiative at Woods Hole Oceanographic designed to transform how people think about the ocean and ocean science. We’re developing new ways to challenge false beliefs, overcome misperceptions, and open people’s minds to the potential of ocean science.

Why the name? Well, the ocean surface covers 71% of the Earth, and in Room 71, you’ll discover that it’s hiding a world that’s far more extraordinary than you imagine.

Our Space

The Room 71 space is our creative hub, where our scientists, engineers, strategists, and partners come together and breakthrough ideas are born.

It’s a space designed to inspire, that celebrates our creative legacy. It’s where we learn from the pioneers at Woods Hole Oceanographic and where we (re)introduce people to the ocean and ocean science.

(re) Introducing the Ocean

It's normal to look at the ocean and get the wrong impression. It's normal to overlook what matters most and grossly underestimate the ocean's importance and potential. It's normal to think you know the ocean better than you do. It's no wonder ocean science and education are undervalued.

At Room 71, we are working with influential brand partners to flip the narrative: We're (re)introducing the ocean-revealing why it's misperceived, how it's not what people imagine, and why it's an extraordinary world of hidden potential.

(re) imagining technology design

Ocean science technology is designed for performance in the harshest environments on the planet. It's not surprising that designs usually look functional rather than aesthetically pleasing.

However, at Room 71, we're making engagement a key function of design, providing ocean-inspired design support to scientists and engineers. We're proving that design aesthetics can enhance performance, spark interest and support, and unlock the potential of science.

(re) imagining science communication

Ocean science communication is uniquely challenging, more so than other fields, due to widespread misperceptions about the importance and potential of the ocean. Communications are often ignored or quickly forgotten.

At Room 71, we're up for the challenge-developing and testing unignorable communications to reach new audiences and create breakthrough awareness and action.
