Alvin Expedition Leader Bruce Strickrott has seen a few strange creatures at the bottom of the sea: octopi, tubeworms, Yeti crabs. He’s even had a newly discovered species of hagfish named after him: Eptatretus strickrotti. This is not the claw of a giant yellow lobster, but the hook of the 25-ton crane lifting a custom-built block of syntactic foam onto Alvin‘s frame (visible in the background) during the recent upgrade of the submarine.(Photo by Tom Kleindinst, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
