Going My Way?

An Emperor penguin stretches its wing to rid it of snow after standing up. Emperors travel long distances on ice by “swimming” on their bellies. WHOI biologist Stephanie Jenouvrier recently led a study of the Emperor penguin colony at Terre Adélie, Antarctica. Based on their findings, she and her colleagues concluded that the species is “fully deserving of endangered status due to climate change.” In May 2014, Jenouvrier hosted international scientists, policy experts, and resource managers at a Morss Colloquium to discuss the challenges of protecting polar ecosystems.(Photo by Peter Kimball, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
