Heavy Lifting

The crew of R/V Knorr deployed a Near Surface Instrument Frame (NSIF) into the Irminger Sea as part an NSF-funded Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI) Global Scale Node last year. The NSIF and the mooring it is attached to support sensors measuring a wide range of physical, biological, chemical, and geophysical variables from the atmosphere to the seafloor. The Irminger Sea Array also contributes to ongoing investigations of the North Atlantic, including OSNAP (Overturning in the Subpolar North Atlantic Program), which involves WHOI scientists Amy Bower, Fiamma Straneo, and Bob Pickart, along with their U.S. and international colleagues.
