Fish-Eye View

A newly-hatched kilifish sits in a glass dish in the laboratory of WHOI biologist Ann Tarrant. These small fish are common in salt marshes and tidal creeks and live in a broad range of conditions—even areas with chemical contaminants. Working with Tarrant is 2009 Summer Student Fellow Abigail LaBella, who studied how low oxygen levels and chemical contaminants affected kilifishes. Tarrant uses molecular and genetic methods to study how animals detect and respond to stresses and chemical signals in their environments.
