2015 Ketchum Award – Dr. Candace Oviatt

Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution awarded the 2015 Bostwick H. Ketchum Award to Candace Oviatt, a professor at the University of Rhode Island, for her pioneering research on coastal ecosystems—particularly in Narragansett Bay. Her decades-long work has advanced understanding of hypoxia, pollution, and the impact of climate change on estuarine systems. Oviatt’s research has also informed environmental policy in Rhode Island, leading to stronger water pollution controls. In addition to her scientific contributions, she directs the Marine Ecosystems Research Laboratory and teaches at URI. The award honors scientists who link innovative coastal research to societal impact.
