Chemistry at Sea

WHOI research associate Leah Houghton works in the main science lab of the research vessel Neil Armstrong on a cruise off the southern tip of Greenland this summer. Houghton was measuring oxygen in water samples collected using the ship’s CTD rosette in order to verify oxygen measurements made by a nearby deep-ocean mooring, part of the NSF-funded Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI) Global Irminger Sea Array. The OOI team also brings samples back to WHOI to analyze them for other chemical and biological characteristics, such as dissolved carbon, nutrients, and chlorophyll—all of which are also measured by the OOI moorings.
