Coastal Upwelling

Strong coastal winds can trigger upwelling, bringing nutrient-rich water to the surface—fueling some of the world's most productive fisheries.

Strong winds blowing along certain coasts can promote a phenomenon known as coastal upwelling. The waters off California, Peru, and western Africa where upwelling provides abundant nutrients include some of the most productive fisheries in the world.
