The True Bosun

The True Bosun

March 15, 2013

What happens on the deck and over the side of a research vessel happens under the watchful eyes of the bosun. Ever since R/V Atlantis sailed on its maiden voyage in 1997—and for nearly two decades before, on Atlantis II—those eyes have belonged to Wayne Bailey. Atlantis master A.D. Colburn describes him as “The true bosun: calm, professional, methodical; equally dedicated to WHOI, to science, and to his shipmates.” On March 31, Bailey will retire, but today many of the scientists and shipmates he has sailed with will gather to wish him well on his new voyage.(Photo by Amy Nevala, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
