WHOI biologist Hal Caswell works through some modeling equations with his 2008 WHOI Summer Student Fellow Kiva Oken. Caswell recently received the 2014 Mindel C. Sheps Award for his contributions to mathematical demography, in particular for his lifetime contributions to mathematical demographic analysis. The prestigious honor is awarded to one scientist biennially by the Population Association of America (PAA), the major professional society devoted to the study of human populations, for contributions to knowledge either in the form of a single piece of work or a continuing record of high achievement.(Photo by Tom Kleindinst, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
