Going Up

After helping to secure the submersible Alvin to the research vessel Atlantis, Patrick Neumann (diving) and Allison Heater (in the water) will return to Atlantis to continue assisting in the sub’s return to the ship. Neumann and Heater were among Atlantis and Alvin crew members who participated in 14 recertification dives off California in November, capping the sub’s three-year major overhaul and upgrade. This spring, with approval from the U.S. Navy, Alvin will dive in the Gulf of Mexico as researchers explore and collect samples from cold seeps and deep-water coral sites.(Photo by Rod Catanach, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
