Catching the Wind

Morse Pond School students Meghan Ghelfi (foreground, left) and Elena Hyatt use an anemometer to measure wind velocity on WHOI’s Shore Lab beach this summer, with help from WHOI Administrative Associate Judy Fenwick (right). The current sixth-graders were participating in the 2017 Girls in Ocean Engineering and Science (GOES) Institute, an annual program that brings middle school girls to WHOI for a hands-on week of engineering and science. WHOI engineer and scientist Anna Michel created and leads GOES with support from a National Science Foundation CAREER grant. Also participating in this year’s program were Morse Pond School students Lillian Brown, Leah Croom, Ella Garredo, and Laila Baptiste (background, left to right).
