Research Interests

I divide my time at WHOI between field photography, science writing, web design, and physical oceanography research.

I am a visual storyteller. Using photographs and words, I tell the stories of oceanographers working in the field. My specialty is shooting in harsh conditions, from winter in the North Atlantic to the Arctic Ocean pack ice. In conjunction with the International Polar Year (2007-2008), I will be documenting scientists working in the Arctic and Antarctic. This project, titled Live from the Poles, is funded by the National Science Foundation. To learn more about my documentary photography and outreach, visit my photography page.

My scientific background is in coastal oceanography. I have been focusing on the dynamics of shelfbreak fronts, the climatic variability of shelf and slope waters, and data visualization techniques. I work with Glen Gawarkiewicz on a number of projects studying the Middle Atlantic Bight shelfbreak front, which extends from the Gulf of Maine to the Chesapeake Bay.
