Happy Halloween!

This morning some very enthusiastic members of the lab got up at 5:00 am to do the first plankton tows of the cruise. We are not yet in the region of primary research interest but it is a good idea to do a preliminary run through of all planned procedures. Doing this ensures a smooth start at our first official station. The tows were
done using a 1.0 mm mesh net to collect microplankton and a 20 micron mesh net to collect nanoplankton. There were a lot of interesting protists and some copepods too. Everyone was very excited because this group has a passion for protists. We will be
doing many more plankton tows and
posting a lot of cool protist photos.
However, today our photos are
celebrating the Halloween holiday.

In the evening we had a festive party complete with decorations, orange Oreos© and plenty of candy. There were several scary costumes. However, the bad jokes in Young Frankinstein (the Halloween feature movie) were the scariest things of the night. It was a fun night with many scientifically inspired costumes. Can you guess what these researchers are?
