Hello everyone. Well we finally hit ice. Ice was first sighted the 1st of November around noon at 63S latitude. We are now coming up to 66S and the ice covers most of
the water surface. It is an awesome site to see the ship break its way through these massive sheets of ice. As the ship slowly moves through a large sheet you can watch cracks form and run throughout the entire
sheet. Massive blocks of ice are broken apart and tossed about as they move past the hull of the ship. The ship shudders occasionally as it moves through a thick layer. Wildlife now begins to appear. My first encounter was with a Weddell seal. I
spotted this moderate sized seal resting on top of the ice. Next I spotted a squadron of Adelie penguins. These animals move though the water like dolphins, popping out and in the water at the bow of the ship. It’s a truly unique sight.

We will be updating the calenders frequently with event highlights and research progress.
