Christchurch NZ! After
14 hours in the air and a few hours in customs,
we have finally made it. Ahhh its time to relax, but wait not yet
we
must first check into the Extreme Cold Weather clothing department
to
try all of our polar gear on to see if everything fits. After
exchanging a few items for a different size I was ready to hit the
showers and explore Christchurch. Not so fast! We first must unload
all of our gear on the boat. Ok no problem, that will be quick
.three
hours later
are we ready to explore Christchurch? No I am ready
for a
shower, food, and bed. The next day I had more time, and energy,
to
explore Christchurch. After returning from the ship for the evening,
I
had the opportunity to walk around downtown. In the heart of downtown
is Christ Church Cathedral, complete with choral music, bells, a
square,
and of course pigeons. Surrounding the cathedral square are the
shops.
A few blocks away from the square is the river which carves its
way
through the city and provides a great area to relax and take it
all in.
Also, not to far from the square is the Christchurch casino which,
for
future reference, does not allow men to come in wearing blue or
black
jeans. That night we had dinner at a local bar and grill, which
had the
first game of the rugby world cup on. Not knowing anything about
the
game I was very curious to find out how it was played. I asked some
of
the locals how it was played and picked up a few key points on the
game,
but I still dont fully understand it. The next morning, before
leaving
for the boat, I went on an early morning walk in a park nearby the
bed &
breakfast I stayed at. I took some pictures of the garden in the
park,
before my camera broke down. Enjoy! -Matt Travao
