Women on the Sea

WHOI mooring technician Meghan Donohue (left) gets ready to guide an Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) into the water off the deck of the R/V Nathaniel B. Palmer. Donohue led mooring deployments on this research cruise to the Argentine Basin in the South Atlantic Ocean in October. She was the first woman to join WHOI’s Mooring Operations and Engineering Group and typically spends several months at sea every year. Women who choose to pursue a career in oceanography say it can be both rewarding and challenging, particularly for new mothers such as Donohue.
