Harry Burnett, steward on R/V Neil Armstrong, answered questions from a group of people touring the ship during WHOI’s recent “Welcome Home Armstrong” public event. Burnett is in charge of ‘hospitality’ on the ship, which includes preparing the food for the ship’s journeys as well as doing the laundry, organizing the supplies, and all aspects of habitability on board. Preparing for a total crew plus science party of 44 to board the ship for roughly 30 days is no easy task: On average, for each trip to sea, the steward will order 80 gallons of milk, 300 dozen eggs, 3,500 pounds of meat and 250 pounds of pasta.
