The seafloor is teeming with methane

Methane seeping from the seafloor provides energy for unique ecosystems in the deep ocean. These ecosystems, found in areas without sunlight, rely on chemosynthesis, where microorganisms use methane as an energy source. This process forms the base of the food chain, supporting a variety of animals adapted to these environments. (Illustration by Jayne Doucette, © Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
