Joseph Keller of Stanford University prepares to take a swing at a pitch from George Veronis of Yale University on WHOI’s McKee Ballfield during a summer softball game. Keller and Veronis are regular participants in the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics (GFD) program, hosted each summer in WHOI’s Walsh Cottage and funded by the National Science Foundation and the Office of Naval Research. Now starting its 50th summer, the GFD program brings together researchers from all over the world to examine fluid flow problems in oceanography, meteorology, geophysics, astrophysics, applied mathematics, engineering, and physics. A little softball is good for the physics problems.
