In December 2012, both WHOI-operated research vessels, R/V Knorr (foreground) and Atlantis completed a scheduled maintenance period in a South Carolina drydock. After returning to WHOI, Knorr returned to its customary duty of supporting oceanographic research and completed a three-month trip with port calls in South Africa, Paraguay, and Barbados and included a research cruise by WHOI chemist Liz Kujawinski to study chemical and biological processes in the western Atlantic. Atlantis remained in the yard for additional work to upgrade its A-frame and is currently in the East Pacific in advance of sea trials with the upgraded and improved Alvin.(Photo by Lance Wills, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
