Girls Build a Robot that “GOES”

Sixth-graders from Morse Pond Middle School in Falmouth, Mass., Mykyla Gallion, Alexia Morton, and Kyarra Lopes (left to right) test a remotely operated vehicle they built during a summer educational program led by WHOI scientist Anna Michel. The Girls in Ocean Engineering and Science (GOES) Institute, funded by Michel’s CAREER grant from the National Science Foundation, brings middle school girls to WHOI each summer to spend a week exploring ocean science and engineering. The program, which will run annually for five years and bring alumnae back each summer, helps promote diversity and educate and inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers.
