The WHOI dock not only provides a place for research vessels to tie up, it also offers Institution scientists and engineers ready access to the water as they develop new instruments and tools. WHOI’s Acoustic Communications group recently took advantage of an empty spot on the dock to test a new version of the software running their Micro-Modem 2 acoustic modem. Ocean science relies on sound because seawater is largely opaque to most frequencies of electromagnetic radiation, including light and radio waves.
