Learning by Doing

Carolyn Garrity, a 2013 Summer Student Fellow from the University of Maine, searches for specimens of benthic organisms in sediment collected from the bottom of Buzzards Bay. Each year the Fellows take a one-day cruise aboard the R/V Tioga to get hands-on experience with oceanographic sampling methods and data collection. During her time at WHOI, Garrity worked with physical oceanographer Steve Elgar on understanding waves, currents, and sand movement in nearshore and surf zones.(Photo by Jayne Doucette, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
