A small jellyfish sits in a beaker in the icebreaker Polarstern‘s shipboard lab. On an expedition in October 2016 to the Arctic Ocean, scientists and engineers from WHOI’s Deep Subergence Lab and NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, led by WHOI scientist Chris German, carried out the Nereid Under Ice vehicle’s first dive to the seafloor under complete sea ice cover. During the trip, a scientist collected a sample of this Arctic jellyfish. Its red-pigmented stomach is a common feature seen in jellyfish from deep or polar waters.
