Hail to the Discovering Heroes

Crowds of family members, WHOI staff, and other well-wishers—including hundreds of journalists and 18 film crews—thronged the pier at WHOI in September 1985, as the research vessel Knorr returned from the joint U.S.-French expedition that discovered the resting place of Titanic. A WHOI-led 1986 expedition returned to explore the wreck with the submersible Alvin and a prototype remotely operated vehicle Jason Jr. In 2012, the 100th anniversary of Titanic‘s sinking, WHOI researchers returned with advanced technology to collect enhanced images and create a comprehensive map of the wreck site.
