Engineer George Tupper began designing, building, and maintaining oceanographic instruments in the 1970s, including these current meters on display at WHOI. During his career spent two to three months each year at sea on research cruises. He “retired” in 2001, but since then has participated as a casual employee on more than 40 additional cruises, traveling to far-flung (and often storm-lashed) places like the Irminger Sea off Greenland.(Photo by Tom Kleindinst, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
