Anchor Almost Away

Aboard R/V Knorr, over the western end of the Reykjanes Ridge near Iceland, bosun Pete Liriakos (kneeling) signals to winch operator Leo Fitz (gray hood) as they deploy the anchor of the first mooring of an international collaborative project investigating the effect of climate on North Atlantic circulation. This mooring included components from WHOI, the University of Miami, and the Netherlands Institute for Sea Research. WHOI scientists Amy Bower, Bob Pickart, and Fiamma Straneo are helping lead the 5-year Overturning in the Subpolar North Atlantic Project (OSNAP).
