A Princely Visit

In November 1961, WHOI’s research vessel Chain paid a port call in Monaco, where the royal family accepted Captain Emerson Hiller’s invitation to a Thanksgiving dinner. Seated next to his mother, the Princess of Monaco, Grace Kelly, is a young Prince Albert II, who will pay a visit WHOI today to learn more about the institution’s research. The prince’s great-great-grandfather, Prince Albert I, was a pioneer in oceanography. In 2006, Prince Albert II established the Prince Albert II Foundation, which focuses on environmental protection, sustainable development, climate change, and the promotion of renewable energies and biodiversity.
