The 2016 Ocean Science Journalism Fellows stop for a group photo during a tour of the Laboratory for Ocean Sensors and Observing Systems building, which is home to offices, labs, and high bays for developing instruments, sensors, moorings, buoys, and other observatory platforms. Eight science journalists, including writers and multimedia producers from the U.S., England, and India, participated in this year’s fellowship. Created in 2000, the program is designed to introduce science journalists to the wide-ranging fields of oceanography and ocean engineering through seminars with top scientists and engineers, laboratory visits, and brief field expeditions.
