About the Ocean Learning Hub

The Ocean Learning Hub is an interactive digital platform created by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) to spark curiosity and deepen understanding of ocean science and engineering. Initially launched in 2000 as Dive and Discover, this long-running program has evolved into a dynamic learning resource that brings the excitement of real-world exploration into classrooms and homes worldwide.

Designed especially for middle school learners (grades 5–8)—but used and enjoyed by learners of all ages—the Ocean Learning Hub offers vivid imagery, engaging videos, interactive activities, and accessible explanations of big ocean topics. Visitors can dive into modules on plate tectonics, the history of oceanography, hydrothermal vents, and more. Educators can filter searches by education standards, grade levels, science practices, and ocean literacy principles. Additionally, visitors can bookmark their findings to return to them later.

With content drawn from nearly 95 years of research at WHOI, the Hub remains a trusted source of ocean education, attracting millions of views annually.

Whether you’re a student, teacher, or lifelong learner, the Ocean Learning Hub is your window into the wonders of the ocean and the science used to explore it.

The Ocean Learning Hub is made possible with generous support from the National Science Foundation, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, and Rick and Beth Willett.
