Dig That Trench

WHOI geophysicist Dan Lizarralde explains how trenches form in the seafloor at a WHOI public event on August 24. Several hundred people attended the event, which also included talks by engineer Andy Bowen and deep-sea biologist Tim Shank. Also featured was the chance to see and learn about two deep-ocean vehicles: hybrid remotely operated vehicle Nereus, which was developed at WHOI, and human occupied vehicle Deepsea Challenger, which was recently donated to WHOI by explorer and filmmaker James Cameron. Both vehicles have visited Challenger Deep, the deepest spot on Earth, and Nereus will soon make a trip to the Kermadec Trench near New Zealand.
