The Office for Technology Transfer is responsible for managing intellectual property assets, technology transfer, and licensing at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.

Mission

The Office for Technology Transfer's mission is to facilitate the global use of innovations arising from Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution's relationship with the sea.

The Office for Technology Transfer covers intellectual property protection and technology transfer activities at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. The office supports scientists, engineers, research staff, and students in the translation of their ideas into useful products and services.  The office is supported by WHOI’s external legal counsel, Goodwin Procter LLC.

The office provides the following services:

  • Patent filing
  • Licensing
  • Legal support
  • Forms and agreements
  • WHOI start up company support and venture capital funding
  • Import/export issues related to technology transfer
  • Identify and coordinate funding sources for WHOI PIs (e.g., SBIR)
