Derek W. Spencer was a wonderful colleague and friend who contributed significantly to progress in chemical oceanography and marine geochemistry worldwide. His selfless service in the Geosecs Program during the 1970’s was essential to the success of this pioneering expedition.Derek contributed significantly to the growth and maturation of the Chemistry Department at WHOI, and to the Institution in general, especially during his years as Associate Director for Research. His role as a student mentor was treasured, and his imprint can be found in many of the scientific contributions we take for granted today.Derek passed away on January 16, 2006.

To honor his memory, his family has made a leadership gift to establish the Derek W. Spencer Endowed Lecture Series.

The Derek W. Spencer Endowed Lecture Series is intended to foster continued intellectual cross-fertilization between physical sciences and ocean sciences with an emphasis on potential emerging innovative research in marine chemistry and geochemistry. The Award is presented every one to three years to recognize the early career accomplishments of a physical scientist whose research has promise of importance to ocean sciences - particularly in the areas of chemical oceanography and marine geochemistry. The person chosen will visit WHOI for the purpose of discussions with staff and students, and to present one or two seminars on the advances in their field of expertise and how these might be of importance to ocean science research.

If you would like to join us in honoring Derek, please send your contribution to the Development office at MS #40.

Sincerely,
Ken Buesseler
