For over 20 years, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) employees have been contributing to The Cape and Islands United Way, supporting the many charitable organizations it serves.  The last formal campaign was in 1997, but even without a formal campaign WHOI staff contributed about $9,500 in 2008.  This year the Staff Committee and the Graded and Marine Personnel Committee (GMPC), at the request of United Way of Cape Cod, are sponsoring a formal campaign.

Ninety-nine percent of every dollar raised stays on Cape Cod.  The Cape and Islands United Way is an independent entity whose policy decisions are made by a Board of Directors comprised of Cape Cod residents.  The Cape and Islands United Way has three community high impact areas of focus: Nurturing and Protecting Children and Youth, Supporting and Sustaining Families, Support for Aging and Vulnerable Populations.  It receives no direct federal funds, although it annually distributes Federal Emergency Management Agency funds to be used by local agencies for federally declared emergency food and shelter programs on Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket.

Information about The Cape and Islands United Way and the organizations it serves is available on its Web site at: uwcapecod.org, from WHOI department administrators, and on Institution bulletin boards. If  you are interested in contributing to one of the many  501(c)3 organization located on Cape Cod other than ones listed on The Cape and Islands United Way organizations, they will honor that donation. For example, the Institution Holiday drive supports the Falmouth Service Center, the Stephen Miller House, Carriage House, Emerson House and the Cape Cod Center for Women, which are all organizations that fall in The Cape and Islands United Way focus areas.

For those individuals that wish to continue their current donation you need to do nothing or you can  change the current amount you donate by filling out a new pledge form.  Those of you who have chosen payroll deduction see your contribution in the list of deductions on each pay stub. Please send your pledge form to Kathy Patterson, MS#45 by December 29, 2009.

For those individuals who wish to make a one-time contribution or start contributing through payroll deduction please fill out the pledge form whereby you can contribute for a specific number of pay periods OR indefinitely.   If you wish to make a one-time donation, you can make a check payable to United Way or make a cash contribution and return it with the completed pledge form.  Checks will be submitted promptly to United Way so that you can verify your account.  If you choose, you may designate specific organizations among the United Way agencies you wish to support by noting them on the pledge form.  That information is relayed to United Way.  Please direct any questions and return all pledge forms to Kathy Patterson, MS#45, ext. 2700, kpatterson@whoi.edu. Please send your pledge form to Kathy Patterson, MS#45 by December 29, 2009.

United Way is the only charitable campaign the Institution officially sponsors, and we ask you to consider helping again this year.  If you have not contributed before, perhaps you can this year.  For those of you who have contributed, thank you for your continued support.
