On August 3, 2006, the Executive Committee of the WHOI Board of Trustees
approved the appointment of a committee to undertake the search for a new President and Director. The Search Committee worked for the past year to lead the overall presidential search process.
Tom Tierney (Co-Chair) WHOI Trustee Tierney is the chairman and founder of Bridgespan Group, a nonprofit
organization that provides management consulting services to
foundations and other nonprofits. He is the former chief executive of
Bain & Company and is currently a director of the National Center
for Public Policy in Higher Education, Harvard Business School, ebay,
Inc., and the Hoover Institution.
Tom Wheeler (Co-Chair) Chairman of the WHOI Corporation Wheeler is the former chairman and CEO of Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance
Company (now MassMutual Financial Group) and is a director of the
Conservancy of Southwest Florida, Genworth Financial, EstateWorks, and
Textron Inc.
Rod Berens WHOI Trustee and Corporation Member Berens is founder of Berens Capital Management. He was previously
affiliated with Morgan Stanley and was head of global equities for
Salomon Brothers. He was chairman of the New York Stock Exchange from
1986 to 1987. He is also a trustee of the Pierpont Morgan Library in
New York.
Andy Bowen WHOI Technical Staff Bowen is a research specialist in the Applied Ocean Physics and Engineering
department. He has been instrumental in the development of the Jason
remotely operated vehicles, and he is now leading the development of the hybrid remotely
operated vehicle, Nereus, designed to operate at the bottom of the
deepest ocean trenches.
Amy Bower WHOI Scientific Staff Bower is a senior scientist in the Physical Oceanography Department. She studies ocean eddies and boundary
currents and their impact on global circulation. She has served on
various Institution committees, including the Tenured Scientist
Executive Committee, the Access to the Sea Strategic Planning
Committee, and the Gender Equity Review Committee. She held the Doherty
Chair in Ocean Studies at the Sea Education Association from 2003-2004.
Scott Doney WHOI Scientific Staff Doney is a senior scientist in the Marine Chemistry and Geochemistry Department. He studies marine biogeochemistry and ecosystem dynamics,
large-scale ocean circulation and tracers, and the global carbon cycle.
He was a 2004 fellow of the Aldo Leopold Leadership Program, which provides scientists
with intensive communications and leadership training to enhance their
ability to communicate effectively with nonscientific audiences.
Robert Frosch WHOI Trustee Frosch
is a senior research associate at the John F. Kennedy School of
Government at Harvard University and a guest investigator in the
WHOI Applied Ocean Physics and Engineering Department. He is co-chair
of the report review committee of The National Academies. He formerly
headed research for General Motors and served as administrator of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).
