Research Interests

My research interest is the study of the interaction of phytoplankton
organisms with their geochemical environment. I examine the factors
determining their growth and the strategies allowing them to adapt to
different environmental conditions.  I am also interested in
understanding the factors driving phytoplankton niche differentiation
in the ocean. Exploring the physiological ecology and biogeography of
present phytoplankton communities is crucial to better understand the
response of these communities to future global change scenarios. My
current perspective involves the combination of both physiological and
molecular techniques to investigate phytoplankton nutrient physiology
in field communities, with a special attention to phosphorus and
nitrogen metabolism. I am also particularly interested in ocean
acidification studies. I received a Veterinary B.S. degree from the
University Complutense of Madrid (UCM), Spain, in 2006. I started
exploring the aquatic world and phytoplankton organisms during my
Ph.D. studies which I performed also at the UCM.  During my PhD I
focused on investigating the effect of different environmental
parameters on phytoplankton physiology and evolution. I developed
different research projects at the Institute of Marine Science of
Andalucía, Spain, and at the National Oceanographic Center of
Southampton, UK. I am currently a postdoctoral researcher at Woods
Hole Oceanographic Institution and LDEO where I study the
physiological ecology of Trichodesmium sp. populations in the ocean.
