The Maria Mitchell Association has established a science center for both education and research through its library, museums, collection and observatories. Cooperates with schools to educate children about the natural history of the island, and with other conservation organizations on the island to preserve and protect the fragile environment.

SPECIAL PROGRAMS: Natural science museum; historic Mitchell House; year-round adult classes; aquarium; herbarium; children's classes; summer lectures; and field trips for birding, natural history, and wildflowers. Observatory open nights for astronomical viewing, year round.

The Foundation's objectives are to preserve and protect places of natural and historic value on Nantucket; to acquire land by gift, purchase, or conservation restriction; to encourage the study of plants and wildlife; and to manage and protect the rare and unique natural features found on its properties. The Foundation has acquired approximately 29 percent (8,700 acres) of Nantucket's land area to date, including beaches, marshes, bogs, shrublands, ponds, grasslands, and heathlands.

PUBLICATIONS: Provides educational materials about the natural and cultural history of its properties. Maps of holdings available ($4).

OTHER INFORMATION: Annual membership: $25 and up.

SPECIAL PROGRAMS: Conducts scientific research and provides internship opportunities.

The NLC is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit dedicated to protecting Nantucket’s natural world and rural character by holding and enforcing conservation restrictions, commissioning scientific research, monitoring development proposals, engaging in legal proceedings to protect natural resources, and educating the public on local environmental issues

The Commission enforces and permits work and activities within 100 feet of coastal and inland wetlands under the State Wetland Protection Act and the Local Wetland By-Law; manages open space and advises other town agencies on resource protection. Available publications include the Town By-Law and Local Regulations. Applications fees range from $15-$1,000 depending on project.

The Department has five major areas of responsibility (harbor management, law enforcement, water quality, beach-pond management, and support maintenance). Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, beach and pond management to protect endangered species and enhance fisheries; shellfish management and propagation; environmental monitoring and planning; enforcement of Federal No-Discharge Zone; safety/boating regulations; performing search/rescue operations, oil spill response; and maintain/deploy navigational aids. Publications available include a guide to shellfishing in Massachusetts; tide charts; catch reports; piping plover and least tern pamphlets; "Wharves and Waterways, Town" (Chapter 137).
