Cooperates with schools to educate children about the natural history of the island, and with other conservation organizations on the island to preserve and protect the fragile environment. The Foundation has acquired approximately 29 percent (8,700 acres) of Nantucket's land area to date, including beaches, marshes, bogs, shrublands, ponds, grasslands, and heathlands. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, beach and pond management to protect endangered species and enhance fisheries; shellfish management and propagation; environmental monitoring and planning; enforcement of Federal No-Discharge Zone; safety/boating regulations; performing search/rescue operations, oil spill response; and maintain/deploy navigational aids.
