The Role of Margin-derived Inputs on Natural Iron Fertilization in the Southern Ocean

There is compelling evidence that iron limits phytoplankton growth in both coastal upwelling and open ocean regions. As the largest oceanic ‘high-nitrate, low-chlorophyll’ region, the Southern Ocean is of great interest to ocean biogeochemistry, with the potential for major changes in carbon export exerting a great influence on atmospheric CO2 and global climate on anthropogenic and geologic timescales. Our goal is to achieve a better understanding of benthic iron sources in the southern Patagonian shelf and the Magellan Strait, in the context of developing a first order description of the interconnected roles of submarine groundwater discharge, porewater advection in surface sediments, benthic production and remineralization in the global carbon cycle.
