Reconstructing Tropical Atlantic Variability

OCCI Project Funded: 2005

Proposed Research

The past fifty years of instrumental data reveal large changes in the Atlantic freshwater balance that may be related to global warming. The goal of the proposed work is to extend the record of tropical Atlantic surface temperature and salinity back beyond the instrumental record, which is too short to enable identification of low-frequency oscillations or long-term trends. We will achieve this with carefully calibrated proxy reconstructions of salinity and temperature from key tropical locations.
