COI Funded Project: Creation of a Digital Database for US East Coast Lightship Oceanic and Atmospheric Records
Project Duration: 6/1/97-5/31/99
Key Words: Western North Atlantic, historic database, meterology
Much historic data exists that has been produced for specific projects
or monitoring purposes. Often, these old data may not be used to
address modern questions because the measurement technology or the
data handling and storage makes the data incompatible with todays
needs. However, historic data is often the only way that coastal
scientists can get a glimpse of past history of coastal processes.
This project seeks to transfer historic lightship data from existing
hard-copy data reports to a digital database. It is anticipated
that once created and checked for quality, this valuable database
will be of practical use to a number of WHOI scientists working
on research projects ranging from shelf circulation studies to climatological
and ecological reconstructions.
