Mark Baumgartner, 2002 Postdoctoral Scholar

Mark is interested in the ecology of cetaceans and has recently studied right whale habitat, foraging behavior, and predator-prey interactions on their summer feeding grounds. During his appointment as an Ocean Life Institute Postdoctoral Scholar, Mark will extend his right whale research to important spring feeding grounds in the offshore waters around Cape Cod, Massachusetts, and in the western Gulf of Maine. In addition to providing a better understanding of right whale ecology, this research will support future efforts to predict right whale distribution so that ship strikes and fishing gear entanglements can be eliminated in this highly endangered population.
