In a day's work

R/V Oceanus headed out from shore in fall 2007, little knowing what lay ahead. The cruise was to recover a buoy measuring waves and a mooring from the CLIMODE project, an investigation of persistent "eighteen degree water" in the North Atlantic. The recovery went smoothly, so the ship had time to detour to retrieve another mooring, which ended up taking more than 21 hours to do. Chief scientist on the cruise was WHOI scientist Robert Weller of the Upper Ocean Processes Group, chair of the Physical Oceanography Department and  principal investigator of the coastal and global components of the Ocean Observatories Initiative recently funded by the National Science Foundation.
