deployment of a multi-corer

Generous gift for seafloor science

Able Seaman Jim McGill guides a multi-corer—resembling a lunar lander—off R/V Oceanus’ deck in the Bahamas in 2006, on a mission to collect tiny seafloor organisms. Multi-corers sample the seafloor with minimum disturbance to soft sediments, maintaining the order of sediment layers in the cores. WHOI Honorary Trustee and Honorary Corporation Member David Stone recently generously donated a new Ocean Instruments Multicorer to WHOI’s coastal research vessel Tioga. The instrument will be available in spring 2009, giving Tioga an increased capacity for conducting research on coastal sediments. (Photo by Joanne Eberhardt, Pratt Institute)
