Alvin on the seafloor

Sub With a View

Alvin pilot Mike Skowronski (center) and pilot-in-training Jefferson Grau (left) peer out onto the seafloor in the Gulf of Mexico during the recent Alvin Science Verification Cruise. One of the key improvements made to the sub during its recent overhaul and upgrade was the addition of two additional, larger, forward-facing viewports. The view of all three overlap to aid in observation, navigation, and sample collection. Images of the sub working on the seafloor were made possible by equipment from the WHOI Multidisciplinary Instrumentation in Support of Oceanography (MISO) Facility and support from the Access to the Sea Fund.
