An Omen of the Ocean

For scientists who spent seven weeks aboard the Sea Ice Physics and Ecosystem eXperiment (SIPEX-2) expedition to the Southern Ocean in 2012, this black-browed albatross was a welcome sign of the connection between land and sea. Though albatross spend most of their lives hovering above the waves, they return to terra firma to breed and feed their young. However, climate-related changes to prey fish populations are threatening the already-endangered albatross.
