The Other Side of Paradise

MIT graduate student Shichun Huang (sitting) joins MIT/WHOI Joint Program students Jessica Warren, Matthew Jackson, and Clare Williams on a tongue of pahoehoe (smooth) lava surrounded by aa (angular) lava on the northeast flank of Mauna Loa volcano. At the end of a long semester studying volcanism and mantle plumes, plates, and hotspots in the WHOI Marine Geodynamics Program, the students took their classroom knowledge into the field on the Big Island of Hawaii.
