Carbon sensor

Ocean Toolbox

Marine chemist Zhaohui "Aleck" Wang recently tested an instrument he developed in collaboration with WHOI engineers for his research on ocean acidification and the carbon cycle. This all-in-one sensor package simultaneously measures pH and dissolved inorganic carbon, which can paint a complete picture of carbon dioxide cycling in and through a local volume of seawater. Wang designed the instrument to be deployed on a buoy for up to three months at a time and can control the sensor as well as stream data in real-time through Ethernet. He plans to deploy it in 2014 at the Martha’s Vineyard Coastal Observatory. (Photo by Tom Kleindinst, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
