Mooring Master

Few people know more about putting moorings into the ocean and getting them back than Scott Worrilow, who arrived at WHOI in 1978 and today is head of the Sub-Surface Mooring Operations Group. Here he demonstrates how a trigger mechanism failed to release a mooring from its anchor 6,000 feet deep in an experiment to measure deep-sea currents. A rescue mission in 2012 used the deep-sea robot Jason to cut the anchor line and retrieve the mooring. Worrilow will talk about his experiences at today's "Science Made Public" Lecture Series, 3:00 p.m. at the WHOI Ocean Science Exhibit Center. (Daniel Cojanu Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution)
